Ferraro named AHL Player of the Week
January 27, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Portland Pirates right wing Peter Ferraro has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 26, 2003. Portland entertained the top two teams in the North Division over the weekend, and Ferraro led the Pirates' attack with four goals and five assists for nine points in two games.
On Friday night, Ferraro celebrated his 30th birthday by scoring twice, including the 200th goal of his AHL career, and adding an assist in Portland's 4-0 win over Manchester. He was also credited with his team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season. Then on Saturday, Ferraro tied franchise records for points in a period (four) and a game (six), finishing with two goals and four assists as the Pirates downed division-leading Providence, 7-4. In 29 games this season, Ferraro has recorded 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points, good for a share of the team scoring lead.
In recognition of his achievement, Ferraro will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Casco Bay Youth Hockey Association in Ferraro's name.
A first-round draft choice of the New York Rangers (24th overall) in 1992, Ferraro has established himself as one of the premier American Hockey League players in recent years. In 429 career AHL contests with Portland, Providence, Hartford and the Binghamton Rangers, Ferraro has registered 202 goals and 264 assists for 466 points. The former NCAA champion (1993, Maine) and U.S. Olympian (1994) was a First Team AHL All-Star in 1996, and won the Jack Butterfield Trophy as MVP of the 1999 Calder Cup Playoffs. A native of Port Jefferson, N.Y., Ferraro will serve as co-captain, along with twin brother Chris, of the PlanetUSA All-Star Team at this week's 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic in Portland.
Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Binghamton center Jason Spezza, Bridgeport goaltender David St. Germain, Chicago left wing Simon Gamache, Cleveland goaltender Vesa Toskala, Grand Rapids center Jason Williams, Hamilton right wing Michael Ryder, Hershey defenseman Brett Clark, Houston goaltender Derek Gustafson, Lowell center Mike Zigomanis, Manitoba center Chris Herperger, Milwaukee left wing Darren Haydar, Norfolk goaltender Steve Passmore, Rochester goaltender Mika Noronen, San Antonio center Mike Green, Springfield goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier, Syracuse left wing Mathieu Darche, Utah defenseman Greg Hawgood and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton right wing Eric Meloche.
