Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- Third baseman Van Pope collected three hits and drove home three runs and Chris Vines pitched six innings of three-hit ball as the Rome Braves toppled the Charleston RiverDogs, 10-2, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. It was the RiverDogs most lopsided loss of the season.
Pope's three-run blast off Charleston starter Jeff Marquez highlighted the Braves' six-run fifth inning that snapped the RiverDogs' modest three-game win streak. With the victory, Rome improves to 2-5 in the second half (41-34 overall) while Charleston falls to 4-3 (47-29).
Rome's six runs in the fifth were the most that the RiverDogs had allowed in a single inning all season. The ten runs in the game tied the most allowed by Charleston this season (vs. Savannah, May 13th).
Charleston jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the first on Cody Ehlers' RBI double down the right field line off of Vines (5-3).
Rome responded in the third with a pair of scores on Brandon Jones' run-scoring single and Pope's single through the left side that scored Yunel Escobar, who had singled.
In the Braves' explosive six-run fifth, first baseman Carlos Guzman belted a three-run homer - his first with the Braves - and Pope drove home a pair with a single to left center.
The RiverDogs added a run in the seventh inning on Estee Harris' RBI single to right center that scored shortstop Hector Made, who singled in his first game as a RiverDog having just been added to the roster from Tampa.
Vines pitched six complete frames and struck out four while walking only two. Marquez suffered the loss for Charleston as he pitched five complete innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits as his record slipped to 4-8.
Game Two of the four-game set is slated for Friday at 7:05 p.m. as Phil Coke gets the call for Charleston while Rome sends James Parr to the hill.
