Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws returned to FirstEnergy Park after having three days off for the All-Star break to take on the Hagerstown Suns, Single-A affiliate of the New York Mets. The BlueClaws offense struggled to get started after having three days off losing to the Suns 6-2.
Lakewood broke up the shutout bid by Hagerstown in the seventh plating two runs on one hit off right-handed reliever Carlos Muniz. Sean Gamble was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning then moved up to second when Jesus Merchan walked. After Greg Golson struck out for the first out of the inning, Brad Harman connected for a two-run double plating the BlueClaws first runs of the game.
Tim Worthington (W, 2-1) made the spot start for the Suns allowing no runs on just five hits while walking one and striking out five over the course of five innings.
Hagerstown took an early lead plating three runs in the second off BlueClaws starter Derek Griffith. The Suns had three doubles, a triple and a walk in the inning. Hagerstown might have been able to get more runs had it not been for the defense of Lakewood erasing two runners trying to stretch doubles into triples.
Grant Psomas led off the inning with a triple then scored on the ground out by Jesus Flores. Jim Burt followed up with a walk then scored on Ryan Coultas's RBI double. With two outs in the inning Carlos Gomez connected for an RBI double pushing the lead to 3-0.
Hagerstown added three more runs over the fourth and fifth innings via the long ball to increase the lead to 6-0. A two-run homer with one out in the fourth off the bat of Ryan Coultas gave the Suns a 5-0 lead. Mike Carp added a solo-homer in the fifth with two outs to cap off Hagerstown's scoring.
Griffith (L, 4-6) allowed all six runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out four over five innings. Matt Sweeny came in relief for the BlueClaws and allowed just one hit over three innings while striking out three. Kyle Allen pitched the ninth allowing a base hit and striking out one.
Golson and Mike Dzurilla both went 0-for-5 in the game while Golson had four strikeouts. Sam Orr was also held hitless going 0-for-4 on the night. Gamble went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Harman finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Lakewood wraps up their home stand and series with Hagerstown on Friday night. Lakewood will send the right-hander Andy Baldwin (2-5, 4.04) to the mound while the Suns will counter with their right-hander Rafael Cova (4-3, 4.17). First pitch on Friday night is at 7:05 p.m. with on-air time at 6:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions, fireworks every Friday night home game and kids eat free Monday Nights courtesy of Shop Rite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against the New York Mets affiliate.
