Rochester Red Wings News Release

Taylor Rogers allowed just a first inning run Thursday.

Taylor Rogers turned in another outstanding pitching performance, helping the Rochester Red Wings to a 4-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox Thursday night at Frontier Field.

The teams meet again Friday at 7:05 p.m., with fireworks after the game. Complete promotion details below...

Pawtucket took an early lead against Rogers, on a two-out RBI single by Allen Craig in the top of the first inning.

PawSox starter Henry Owens was ranked as Boston's top pitching prospect by Baseball America coming into this season; Owens walked Wings lead-off man Doug Bernier to open the bottom of the first. It was the 36th walk of the season issued by Owens, high in the league so far. But Owens set down the next three batters, two by strikeout.

The Wings got their bats going in a big way in the third inning, as the first four batters managed to reach base and score. James Beresford led off the inning with a base hit, and scored on an RBI double by Eric Fryer. After Bernier reached base on his second walk of the night, he was driven in by Reynaldo Rodriguez who also earned an RBI double. Oswaldo Arcia and Kenny Vargas each registered an RBI, and the Red Wings found themselves on top 4-1 at the end of the third.

Rogers settled down following the first inning, giving up only one additional hit and one walk through five innings. Rogers also got help from some stellar play in the outfield as Arcia and Danny Ortiz each made a diving catch in back-to-back innings.

Other than the third inning where he surrendered all four of his runs, Owens was solid. He had racked up seven strikeouts through five innings, and worked his way out of a two on, no out situation in the Rochester fifth. He worked five innings and allowed four hits, four earned runs, and three walks. Owens threw 97 pitches, 62 for strikes. Jonathan Aro took over for Owens in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Rogers worked into the eighth inning for the second time this season, got two quick outs - including a sliding catch by Rodriguez in left - then gave up a single to Jackie Bradley, Jr. Rogers got a flyball out to strand Bradley.

Rogers opened the ninth inning facing Pawtucket's 3-4-5 hitters. Travis Shaw reached on an infield hit, and that prompted Rogers' exit to a standing ovation. Michael Tonkin came into the game. Jose Martinez made a nice play at third base to retire Allen Craig on a groundout, and Tonkin fanned Bryce Brentz for the second out.

Rogers (5-3) worked 8+ innings, gave up six hits and one earned run. Rogers walked one, struck out three, and threw 98 pitches - 65 for strikes. Tonkin recorded his sixth save of the season.

Fryer and Beresford each had two hits. Beresford increased his average to .335, placing him fourth in the league behind Bradley Jr.

NOTES: After walking in his first three at-bats, Doug Bernier singled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games...With saves in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep in Lehigh Valley, A.J. Achter became the first Red Wing to achieve that since Bobby Korecky did it July 21, 2007 in Ottawa.
