92-Year-Old Harriette Thompson to Throw out Ceremonial First Pitch Sunday

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - On Sunday, June 7, the Charlotte Knights will honor 92-year-old Charlotte native Harriette Thompson, who recently became the oldest woman to ever complete a marathon at the age of 92 years, 65 days. Thompson, who competed in San Diego's Rock-n-Roll Marathon on Sunday, May 31 -- her 16th marathon --will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the Knights 2:05 p.m. game on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark.

A classically trained pianist, Thompson finished the 26.2-mile race in 7 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds. Last year, she set another record as she turned in the fastest time ever recorded in her age group - finishing in 7 hours, 7 minutes and 42 seconds.

A cancer survivor, Thompson ran her first marathon at 76 years old. Since then, she has completed the San Diego's Rock-n-Roll Marathon 16 out of its 18 years it has been held. Thompson has competed in all 16 races on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Team In Training. Over the course of her 16 races, her fundraising efforts have raised more than $100,000.

Gates open at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday as the Knights host the Norfolk Tides in the finale of a three-game series from BB&T Ballpark. Sundays are Sunbelt Family Sundays, presented by Sunbelt Rentals. After all Sunday home games this season, kids can "Run the Bases" presented by Academy Sports and Outdoors.

The Knights kick off their three-game homestand from BB&T Ballpark on Friday, June 5 with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Norfolk Tides. After the game, the Knights will light up the sky with post-game fireworks courtesy of BB&T and 107.9 The Link. One night later, the two teams will play game two of their series with a 7:05 p.m game. The Hickory Tavern KnightinGals will be on hand for Saturday's game.
