RailRiders Power Their Way to Win in Series-Opener

Syracuse NY (June 4, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the first game of a two-game set with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 10-2, on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The RailRiders rode a five-run fourth inning to beat the Chiefs. Matt den Dekker homered in the sixth in his return to Syracuse.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (29-26) struck first in the fourth inning where it tallied five times against Triple-A novice Austen Williams. After three innings of no-hit baseball, Williams allowed two singles in a row to Cole Figueroa and Rob Refsnyder to open up the fourth. A passed ball by Dan Butler allowed both runners to move up a base to put runners on second and third with no outs. Kyle Roller and Austin Romine both followed with consecutive RBI groundouts to give the RailRiders a 2-0 lead. However, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was not finished. With two outs, Ben Gamel drew a walk and Tyler Austin singled to right field to put two more runners on in the inning. Then, Nick Noonan nailed a line-drive three-run home run over the right-center field fence to give the RailRiders a 5-0 advantage.

Kyle Roller added two more Scranton/Wilkes-Barre runs in the top of the fifth inning with one swing of the bat. After Rafael Martin retired the first two RailRiders, Refsnyder registered his second single of the game to extend the inning. Roller followed with a two-run home run to right field to extend the lead to 7-0 halfway through the game.

Syracuse (17-37) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one away, Butler singled up the middle. Cutter Dykstra reached base on an error by Figueroa at third base to put two on for Tony Gwynn Jr. The left fielder for the Chiefs singled off the glove of Refsnyder at second base into center field to plate Butler to make it 7-1 after five innings.

The Chiefs added another in the bottom of the sixth off the bat of den Dekker. Facing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Jaron Long with one away, den Dekker drilled a long home run over the right field fence. den Dekker's second home run on the season made the score 7-2 at the end of six.

The RailRiders tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the eighth against Erik Davis. Romine led off the inning with a walk and Gamel followed with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Noonan drew a walk to load the bases. Davis forced in a run with a walk to Jonathan Galvez to increase the deficit to six. Then, Mason Williams reached on an error by Dykstra that allowed two more runs to score and expanded the lead to 10-2 in favor of the RailRiders.

Syracuse seeks its first win in 12 games against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday night at 7:05 pm. Paolo Espino is scheduled to start for Syracuse against Luis Severino for the RailRiders.
