INDIANAPOLIS - Endy Rodríguez clubbed his fifth home run of the season, but the Columbus Clippers outlasted the Indianapolis Indians in a back-and-forth affair in Sunday's series finale, 7-6.
With the game knotted at five apiece in the top of the eighth, Oscar Gonzalez blasted a two-run shot off Duane Underwood (L, 0-3). Gonzalez's finished the afternoon 5-for-5 with his go-ahead home run completing his cycle.
Both teams brought across a pair of runs in the first inning. Gonzalez opened the scoring with an RBI double and Jhonkensy Noel followed with a run-scoring single. Right fielder Miguel Andújar countered with the Indians (33-41) first run on an RBI single. Cal Mitchell later grounded into a fielder's choice even the score.
Following a Micah Pries sacrifice fly in the third, Endy Rodríguez evened the scored once again with a 414-foot home run. It was his fifth home run of the season and his first since May 16 vs. Iowa.
Indianapolis took its first lead of the game with an RBI single by Vinny Capra in the sixth. Columbus (33-41) retook the lead with a pair of RBI-groundouts by George Valera and Noel in the seventh. Andújar tied the contest with second of three hits in the game and second RBI single of the day in the bottom half. With the bases loaded, Jhon Romero (W, 3-3) came in relief to strike out Grant Koch and escape further damage.
After Gonzalez's go-ahead homer, the Indians threatened in their final at-bat. Down to their last out with runners on the corners, Koch singled home Andújar. Randy Labaut (S, 1) stranded the winning run on first base after Vinny Capra flied out to finish the game.
The Indians will head to Louisville on Wednesday night to begin a six-game set with the Bats at Louisville Slugger Field at 6:35 PM ET. Both teams have yet to name a starter.
