DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (43-30) fell to the Memphis Redbirds (39-36) in the final game of its six-game series on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park by a score of 16-6.

Iowa found itself in a hole early as Memphis put up six runs in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Ben Brown got in a bases loaded jam and proceeded to hit a batter and then walk the next two to give Memphis a 3-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Errol Robinson then came up to bat and sent a bases clearing triple to deep center field. Brown was subsequently pulled from the game following the triple.

The I-Cubs did respond in the bottom half of the frame with one run on a ground out from Jared Young. However, Memphis came right back with another four runs to increase its lead to 10-1. Taylor Motter sent a two-run homer to center, and Chase Pinder followed with a two-RBI double a couple of batters later.

In the third, the two ball clubs each scored one run as Luken Baker hit a solo home run for Memphis and Darius Hill roped an RBI single up the middle for Iowa to make it an 11-2 ballgame. Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Redbirds put up another run on a sacrifice fly by Masyn Winn.

The bottom of the fifth was the bright spot for the I-Cubs as some momentum was gained with four runs scored to cut into the deficit. Young came through with his second RBI of the day with another single and Chase Strumpf launched a three-run homer over the fence in right field to make the score 12-6.

Any momentum the I-Cubs had quickly disappeared, however, as Memphis put up another four-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. The Redbirds scored all four of their runs via singles from Tres Barrera, Pinder, and Richard Palacios pushing their lead back up to 10 with the score now at 16-6.

The 16-6 score held course over the final three innings with neither team scoring a run to end the game.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Darius Hill paced the Iowa offense with his first three-hit performance of the season. The outfielder went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and one RBI. It was the 15th time Hill has recorded multiple hits in a game this season.

- Relief pitcher Cam Sanders continued his stellar stretch on the mound with his outing, tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball to go along with two strikeouts and no walks. Over his last three outings, Sanders has not allowed a run or a hit and has struck out eight compared to just one walk.

Iowa will have a couple of days off before it returns to action on Wednesday, June 28, as it hits the road to take on the Omaha Storm Chasers. First pitch from Werner Park is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
