Rockers Fall to Mallards in Series Opener
June 22, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Madison, Wis.- The Rockers dropped the series opener to the Madison Mallards in the first meeting between the two ball clubs this season.
The storyline at the plate for Green Bay was being held hitless after the third inning. Three early hits in the game gave Green Bay a 3-0 lead, but Madison's bullpen would shut them down from then on.
Starting on the hill for the Rockers was Grayson Walker (Dickinson). Walker pitched three innings on the night for Green Bay, giving up five earned runs and striking out two batters.
The Rockers struck first with a second inning that was highlighted by the long ball. First baseman Mateo Matthews (Wagner) launched a two-run homer to right field to make it a 2-0 ball game. The other run who scored was Austin Fawley (Kentucky), who reached on a walk.
Two batters later, catcher Nainoa Cardinez (Hawaii) drove a home run to the deepest part of the park in center field, putting Green Bay up 3-0.
The Mallards would respond over the next two innings with five runs of their own. Their hot stint at the plate was fueled by Korbyn Dickerson (Louisville), who had a two-RBI triple.
After Madison's four runs in the third inning, the two teams would go scoreless for the next three innings. For Green Bay, this would largely be due to reliever Jake Liberta (Hawaii-Hilo). He kept the Mallards to one hit across 2.1 innings on the hill.
After two walks from Liberta, Asher Finke (Newman) would enter the game for the Rockers. On the first pitch he threw, he forced a double play to keep the sixth inning scoreless. Finke would go the rest of the way on the hill, striking out three batters.
With the loss, the Rockers are now 15-10 and remain in first place. The team will await the conclusion of the Wausau Woodchucks game to see if they'll enter a two-way tie for first.
Up next for the Rockers is game two of the season series against Madison. Friday night's first pitch from Warner Park will be at 6:35 p.m.
