Rochester Tops Bisons 10-8 on De Aza's Homer
July 30, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Alejandro De Aza's two-run home run with two outs in the ninth was the final blow in the Red Wings 10-8 victory over the Bisons, Tuesday afternoon from Sahlen Field. The victory gave the Herd's Thruway-rival a split of the two-game series in downtown Buffalo.
De Aza's homer provided Rochester their fifth and final lead in a game that saw both teams counter each other with scoring rallies. With the game tied at eight, Jake Cave singled off the glove of shortstop Richard Urena with one gone in the ninth inning to give the Wings a base runner. Herd reliver Jason Adam rebounded to strike out Zander Wiel, but De Aza got enough of a first-pitch fastball from the righty to drive it out to the ballpark's pavilion area in right-center.
It was a tough defeat for a Herd squad that continued to fight back, particularly with clutch two-out hits. After Rochester took a 2-0 first inning lead, Andy Burns beat out a two-out infield single in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game a two. Catcher Michael De La Cruz followed with a two-run double to center that gave Buffalo their only lead of the game and 4-2
After Rochester took a 7-6 lead in the sixth, it was Patrick Kivlehan's turn to come through with a two-out hit as his single to left field scored Urena to tie the game.
Then in the eighth with the Herd trailing by one again, it was Burns' chance again as the veteran singled down the right field line with two gone to score Socrates Brito. That made the score 8-8, the final time the Herd and Wings were even.
Andrew Sopko started for the Bisnos and allowed six runs in five innings of work in a no-decision. In taking the loss, Adams fell to 0-3 on the season.
The Bisons had 12 hits in the contest, but left 12 men on base. The Herd also hit in inning-ending doubleplays in three consecutive frames from the second to the fourth.
The Bisons will now leave for a short two-game series in Lehigh Valley before returning back to Buffalo for a Honda fridaynightbash! game against the Syracuse, part of a three-game weekend series against the team's other Thruway rival.
