De Aza's 9th-Inning Homer Caps Wild Win
July 30, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
Alejandro De Aza hit a two-out, two-run home run in the 9th inning and Rochester beat Buffalo 10-8 in a wild back-and-forth game on Tuesday afternoon at Sahlen Field.
The game featured six lead changes, including five instances when the Red Wings (53-55) took the lead. The contest also began 29 minutes late due to rain.
The Wings wasted little time to begin the game after Nick Gordon doubled on the second pitch of the day. He would score on Jake Cave single to make it 1-0. Cave would score on a Tomas Telis single to make it 2-0, but Telis was thrown out at second base to end the inning.
The Bisons (56-52) responded with four in the bottom of the 1st against Devin Smeltzer to take a 4-2 lead. Caleb Hamilton hit his first Triple-A homer in the 2nd to tie the game and Cave tripled in a run with two outs and Rochester led 5-4. An error, a wild pitch, and a Gordon single extended the advantage to 6-4 in the 4th.
Smeltzer would allow four runs on four hits, a hit batter, and three walks while striking out one over 3.0 innings.
Buffalo would tie the game with two runs in the 5th. Wynston Sawyer's first home run since April gave the Wings the lead again at 7-6 but the Bisons responded again in the bottom half to even the score.
Cave doubled to begin the 7th and scored on a Telis two-out RBI single, making it 8-7. Jeremy Bleich (3-2, 1-0 with Rochester) thought he had Andy Burns struck out to end the 8th but the at-bat continued and Burns tied the game with a two-out single.
That set the stage for the 9th. Cave singled with one out, his fourth hit of the day, and De Aza hit the first pitch he saw from Jason Adam (0-3) with two outs deep to right-center to cap a wild afternoon down the Thruway. Ian Krol issued a two-out walk but locked down his ninth save of the season and eighth since joining Rochester.
Cave finished 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI, and three runs scored while Gordon and Telis both finished with three hits apiece.
