Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Christian Kelley homered and had two RBI for the Indians, but Ka'ai Tom smoked a three-run triple with two outs in the sixth inning to push the Clippers past Indianapolis on Monday night in a back-and-forth affair, 10-6. Bobby Bradley hit two of Columbus' three home runs as the Tribe's IL West deficit fell to eight games. The game was delayed 2 hours and 24 minutes at the outset due to rain.

The Clippers (61-45) gained control in the sixth by sending nine batters to the plate, despite recording just two hits in the inning. Tribe starter Eduardo Vera walked Yu Chang and gave up a single to Ryan Flaherty before beaning Eric Haase on an 0-2 pitch to load the bases with one away. Luis Escobar inherited the bases-loaded jam and retired Eric Stamets on a fly ball, but Tom laced a 3-0 pitch to the wall in right-center for his second triple to clear the bases.

Tom drilled another run-scoring triple off Tyler Lyons to the same gap in the eighth to extend Columbus' lead to 8-5. He later scored on a Barnes fielder's choice to Cole Tucker at short. Columbus added a third run in the eighth on a Lyons throwing error, and a Jake Elmore two-out RBI single in the home half gave Indy its sixth and final run.

Columbus took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back, two-out solo shots by Brandon Barnes and Bradley in the first inning. The Indians cut the deficit in half in the third on a Christian Kelley solo blast - his fourth of the season - but Bradley took Eduardo Vera deep again to start the fourth, pushing the Clippers' advantage back to two.

Indy (53-53) took its first lead of the game with three runs in the fourth. Will Craig reached on an infield single and after Pablo Reyes drew a four-pitch walk, Jason Martin roped a run-scoring single to right. Right fielder Daniel Johnson attempted to cut the ball off moving to his left, but he overran the liner allowing Reyes to race home from first for the tying run and Martin to sprint to third. Kelley then put the Tribe on top with a sacrifice fly.

Both teams exchanged runs in the fifth to make it a 5-4 ballgame. Singles by Eric Stamets and Daniel Johnson led to an RBI groundout by Brandon Barnes. Indy got the run back thanks to an Erik Gonzalez double, stolen base and wild pitch thrown by Shao-Ching Chiang.

Vera (L, 5-9) was charged with seven earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Over his last four starts, the right-hander owns a 15.12 ERA (28er/16.2ip). Jon Edwards (W, 5-1) stranded two men in scoring position to end the fifth and struck out two in 1.2 innings pitched to earn the win.

The Tribe dropped to 1-5 in six meetings with the Clippers at Victory Field.

The Indians and Clippers wrap up their two-game set on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. ET. James Marvel (3-0, 1.90) will toe the rubber against Aaron Civale (3-1, 2.29).
