Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Salmon Kings fished for two points against the West Division sixth ranked Phoenix Roadrunners to begin a three-game road trip. The game came down to the final three minutes, as the Roadrunners cracked the tie and ran away with a 5-3 win.
Victoria opened the scoring in the first period as Winger KC Timmons capitalized on a Phoenix turnover 11:28 into the frame. Timmons made a left-to-right backhander for his 11th goal of the season. Just under two minutes later, the Roadrunners tied the game 1-1 as a breakaway save by Netminder BJ Boxma ended up on the stick of a trailing Shawn Snider who tapped it in for his eighth of the season.
Phoenix took the 2-1 lead with just 39 seconds left in the first when Paul Ballatyne slapped it five-hole from the point on Boxma.
Victoria answered 39 seconds into the second period, as Adam Huxley was spotted by Lanny Gare, and rippled the mesh to tie it 2-2.
Each team traded power play opportunities, but couldn't break the tie. Solid penalty killing efforts from All-Star Rookie Adam Taylor eventually led to Victoria's third goal, as he set up Lanny Gare in a three-on-two with 2:42 left in the second.
Another late period goal by Phoenix tied the game at 3-3 with just 17 seconds left, as Forward Jean-Francois Soucy soared down the left wing and found the five-hole.
An intermission scrum led to two game misconducts handed out to Phoenix and a game misconduct to Huxley.
The third period stayed tied until the final three minutes of the game. Soucy's point shot trickled past Boxma at 17:20 into the final frame, and Justin Quenneville sealed the victory one minute later as Boxma chased a puck behind the net, which found its way to Quenneville in front of the wide open cage.
Victoria was 0-5 on the power play and Phoenix finished 0-2. Mike Mole earned his thirteenth win and Boxma suffered his tenth loss. Phoenix out shot Victoria 42-34.
The Salmon Kings head to San Diego to try and clip the wings of the Gulls on Saturday night.
