Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Bombers tried to start their first of four games in the next five days off on the right foot and keep pace in the North Divisional playoff race by earning points from the Reading Royals on Friday night.
The Royals would score the only goal of the first period: 21 seconds into the game on a loose puck on the backside of Bombers goalie David Currie and tap it home to take a very early 1-0 lead. Whether it was that goal or just the fact that the Bombers were trying to show the Royals they were not going to be pushed around, three fights occurred in the next eight minutes of that first period, and the Royals would take the 1-0 lead into the locker room after one.
Another quick goal by the Royals in the second at the 2:29 mark made it 2-0, but the Bombers would answer minutes later. Dominic Noel (10) cut the lead in half on the power play, banging home a rebound off of Royals goalie Cody Rudkowsky, assists to Szwez (18) and Konsorada (21) at the 4:25 mark to make it 2-1. Reading would capitalize on a power play to again make it a two goal lead and then before the period was over that would add one more to allow themselves to take a 4-1 into the dressing room after forty.
The Bombers would start the third period on a one man advantage, but a Royals delay of game penalty would make it a two man situation and what happened next, could not have been expected by anyone in the building that night.
Scott Cameron (17) put one home only: 35 seconds into the third, assists to Konsorada (22) and Szwez (19) to immediately get the deficit down to two. Then coming off the two man advantage just 1:06 later Szwez (19) would snipe the inside far post, again on the power play to make it 4-3 with still 18:19 left in regulation, assists to Teplitsky (19) and Cameron (32).
Not even four minutes later the building, the bench and the Bombers erupted when Szwez (20) tied the game at 4-4 at the 5:05 mark sneaking one past the near side post of Rudkowsky, assists to Tennant (2) and Flood (11).
Dayton owned Reading in every aspect of that third period out shooting the Royals 14-1, and let's not forget how well David Currie played in the second to give the Bombers a chance to make the comeback and because of that the game would head to overtime.
The Bombers had to kill two big penalties in overtime and did, but with only :22 seconds left before the shootout (in which the Bombers are 5-0-1 on the season ) Dany Roussin slid one between Currie to give the Royals the two points, final score, Royals 5 and Bombers 4 in overtime.
The Bombers continue their 15th Anniversary season at home on Saturday night at 7:00pm, as their North Division rivals the Reading Royals come to town. The game can be heard on on line at www.daytonbombers.com. Dayton Bombers Hockey, celebrating 15 years of fun.
