Asheville Tourists News Release
CHARLESTON - Asheville dropped their fifth straight road game on Thursday night and their fourth on a current seven-game trip. Playing on little sleep against another quality Northern division opponent, the Tourists fell in the series opener to the West Virginia Power 5-1.
Asheville fell behind early after West Virginia hit back-to-back Home Runs in the bottom of the first. The Power had a runner at second base with two outs when Ryan Ramiz hit a two-run blast over the right-field wall. Joseph Rosa followed with a solo shot to right and the Power led 3-0 after one.
Asheville looked like they were poised to cut into the lead in the top of the third. Terrin Vavra crushed a ball into right field with two runners on base but it was hauled in at the wall. The Tourists also had an opportunity in the fifth with a runner at third base with only one out; however, Asheville once again came away empty-handed.
West Virginia made it 4-0 with a run in the fourth inning. The Tourists plated their lone run in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Vavra. The Power answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh for their final margin of victory.
Make no mistake the Tourists battled all night. Asheville hit into a lot of loud outs and worked deep at-bats all game. Starting pitcher Frederis Parra had to depart in the fourth inning due to an injury and the bullpen pitched well. Wander Cabrera and Derrik Watson each made their first appearances of the season in relief efforts.
The Tourists and the Power are back at it on Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
