Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds put on an offensive exhibition for their 10th straight home win, punching out 20 hits and crushing the Asheville Tourists 15-7 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Matthew Hammonds (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Shorebirds (15-2), tossing three scoreless two-hit innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Alfredo Garcia (0-3) took the loss for the Tourists (0-3), surrendering seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 frames.
Asheville got a pair of runs in the second inning as Daniel Jipping singled in one and scored on a wild pitch. Seamus Curran answered for Delmarva with a solo homer in the second. In the top of the third, John Cresto plated one more on an RBI groundout, putting the Tourists up 3-1.
Then came the bottom of the third. Adam Hall led things off innocently enough with a single to right. Doran Turchin followed with a walk, and Daniel Fajardo notched a single to bring Hall in and make it 3-2. Will Robertson walked to load the bases, and Jean Carlos Encarnacion lashed a two-run double down the left field line. Turchin and Fajardo scored, and while Robertson was thrown out trying to score as well, the Shorebirds still had a 4-3 lead.
The beat kept rolling on from there. Ben Breazeale walked, and Curran singled home another to make it 5-3 and knock Garcia out of the game. The Asheville misery continued with Nick Kennedy on the mound. Nick Horvath doubled to left to drive in another, then after a strikeout Hall came up again and singled home two more, making it 8-3. Turchin notched an RBI base hit to score Hall, and Fajardo singled again to put two on. After a Robinson RBI single, Encarnacion provided a fine bookend with a sharp grounder that bounced off the second base bag and into right center, scoring Fajardo to push it to 11-3.
By the time Breazeale grounded out to the pitcher for the third out, Delmarva had sent 15 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on 10 hits.
The teams traded light blows for the rest of the game. Robertson doubled home an insurance run in the fifth to make it 12-3. In the seventh, the Tourists put three on the board, highlighted by a Cresto two-run double. The Shorebirds answered with two in their seventh on a Breazeale two-run single, making it 14-6.
After the Tourists put up another on a Grant Lavigne RBI double in the top of the eighth, Hall and Turchin smacked back-to-back two-out doubles in the bottom of the eighth to give the game its final margin.
On a banner day for nearly the entire batting order, Hall led the slaughter with a five-hit night for the Shorebirds, going 5-for-6 with a double, four runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Turchin and Fajardo each had three hits and scored three runs, driving in three between the two of them. Encarnacion finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, all in the 10-run third. Robertson and Curran each had multi-hit, multi-RBI games.
The only Shorebird not to get in on the fun was Cadyn Grenier, who saw his long on-base streak end with an 0-for-6 night. Grenier had reached base in 15 straight games to start the season and 25 straight dating back to last August.
Willie MacIver went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Tourists, who managed 13 hits of their own. Cresto drove in three runs on a 1-for-5 night.
Delmarva starter Hector Guance lasted just three innings after throwing 74 pitches. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out one. Before Asheville scored in the seventh, Delmarva relievers had strung together 14.1 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the beginning of the Asheville series on Monday.
With a win the Shorebirds are now 13-1 in their last 14 games. It's the third time in franchise history Delmarva has won 13-of-14; the inaugural 1996 Shorebirds started the season 13-1, while the 2007 Shorebirds went 13-1 from May 31 through June 14.
The Shorebirds will see if they have any hits left for the Thursday night series opener against the Augusta GreenJackets. Blaine Knight (1-0, 1.15) will start for Delmarva against Augusta's Seth Corry (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Thursday night is Maryland Pride Thursday at Perdue Stadium, plus Kiss 95.9 Thirsty Thursday presented by Salisbury Pit & Pub. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
