Delmarva Completes Sweep of Asheville Thanks to Massive Inning

April 25, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

SALISBURY - Wednesday night started well for the visiting Asheville Tourists as they attempted to salvage their series finale against the Delmarva Shorebirds and hand the Northern division leaders their first home loss of the season in the process. However, Asheville's fast start was quickly erased and Delmarva cruised to 15-7 win.

The erasing took place in the bottom of the third. Asheville held a 3-1 lead entering the frame but the Shorebirds caught fire. Delmarva sent 15 batters to the plate, tallied ten hits, worked three walks, and plated an astounding ten runs to take an 11-3 lead after three. The last time a Tourists opponent plated at least ten runs in an inning is anyone's best guess, but it's been at least 10 years.

The Tourists continued to fight and put together a fine offensive day overall. Asheville tallied 13 hits, including three from Willie MacIver. Asheville also worked seven walks and battled all night against a talented Delmarva pitching staff.

Early on the Tourists took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Daniel Jipping's RBI single and a wild pitch. John Cresto added an RBI groundout in the third and later clubbed a two-run double. Grant Lavigne reached base four times and also hit an RBI double.

Unfortunately, the big inning was too much to overcome. Delmarva finished with 20 hits and in the process ran their home record to 10-0. The Shorebirds have the second-best record in Minor League Baseball.

Things do not ease up for Asheville. Next up is a West Virginia team that has won eight of nine and sports an 8-1 home record in 2019. The Tourists open up a four-game series at Appalachian Power park on Thursday night at 7:05pm.
