Norfolk Admirals News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Norfolk Admirals went three-for-four during a four-game road trip, ending with a 5-4 shootout win against the Manchester Monarchs, Sunday afternoon at Verizon Wireless Arena.
Winger Devin Mantha picked up his fourth goal of the season after Greg Chase grabbed possession of the puck near the right wall. Mantha received Chase's bouncing pass after it hit off of Steven Whitney's stick. Mantha's shot in the slot was deflected in by Manchester's netiminder Doug Carr at 6:15 in the first.
The Monarchs soon answered to even the score at 7:33 after Danick Paquette notched one in from the top of the right circle after it ricocheted off of Norfolk goalie Nic Riopel's chest, making it 1-1 in the opening frame.Â
Manchester scored first in the second period at 1:25, after Joe Diamond carried it into the left circle of the Admirals zone; he passed it through the slot to Matt MacKenzie. MacKenzie's shot near the hash marks hopped over Riopel when Derek Arnold swatted it in at the top of the crease putting Manchester in the lead, 2-1. Right after the Admirals killed the penalty, Austin Block attempted to shove the puck in as Riopel fell, but could not convert. Maxim Kitsyn then collected it in front goal to widen the lead to 3-1 at 6:08. Riopel was then pulled in favor of Ty Rimmer.
Admirals had a two-man advantage after Manchester blueliners David Kolomatis and Mackenzie both sat in the sin bin for high-sticking. Whitney's one-timer at the high slot tightened Manchester's lead to 3-2 at 12:38 in the second frame. At 16:09, Alexis Loiseau tied the game during a power play when his equalizer hit just underneath the crossbar from the right ring.
During a 4-on-3 power play for the Monarchs, Diamond set a behind-the-net pass to defenseman Michael Boivin. With just 40.5 seconds remaining, Boivin put the Monarchs back on top to wrap up the middle frame, 4-3.
The Admirals tied the game again after Nick MacNeil fed the puck from the right boards to Nick Pageau at the right point. Pageau found wide-open Captain Jordan Hill when his laser from the left point marked the only goal in the third period at 16:41, launching the Admirals and the Monarchs into overtime.
After a scoreless extra skate, both teams missed their first two attempts in the shootout. During Norfolk's second try, Scott Allen slowed down as he got near the net and scored top shelf, securing a win for the Admirals, as Rimmer managed to save the final stab on net.
Nic Riopel who was pulled after letting in three goals in the second period, kept out 20 out of 23 shots for the Admirals. Ty Rimmer who replaced Riopel, turned away 16 out of 17 attempts on net, while Monarch Doug Carr blocked 26 out of 30 for Manchester. Norfolk scored twice while the Monarchs only converted on one, as both teams had seven man-advantages.
The Admirals will return back home to face the Elmira Jackals for back-to-back games Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
