Wheeling Nailers News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - For the third consecutive game, the Wheeling Nailers were involved in a one-goal contest, and for the third time in a row, the end result went in favor of the opposition. With the score tied at one in the last minute of the second period, the Indy Fuel received a four-minute power play. They scored twice on it, building a 3-1 lead, before ultimately hanging on for a 3-2 win at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Anton Zlobin extended his point streak to eight games on goals by Mathew Maione and Cody Wydo.
The first period was even in nearly every aspect, as both teams fired eight shots on goal. However, there was one difference in the frame, as the Fuel pocketed the lone goal. Peter Schneider poked a puck free at his own blueline, then raced ahead for a partial breakaway. The speedy forward moved the puck to his forehand, lifting it into the top-right corner of the goal.
The Nailers drew even at the 6:59 mark of the second period with a power play goal. Mathew Maione let a wrist shot go from high in the zone, ringing it off of the post and into the back of the net. The assists on the play went to Jarrett Burton, who registered his team-leading 33rd point, as well as Anton Zlobin, who extended his point streak to eight. The score stayed tied until the dying seconds of the stanza, when Indy went back on top with a power play goal. Zach Miskovic's wrist shot from the top of the right circle found its way into the right side of the cage.
The penalty called in the final minutes of the second period was a double-minor for high sticking, which the Fuel also converted on at the 1:48 mark of the third period. Rhett Bly shoveled a pass to Michael Colantone, who ripped a wrist shot into the top-left corner from the right side of the slot. The Nailers pulled to within a goal with their second power play marker of the afternoon. Zlobin and John McCarron jammed the puck toward the front of the net, and eventually, Cody Wydo had the puck end up on his stick, allowing him to bury a shot into the right side of the goal. Wheeling received one more power play with 1:46 left, but was unable to net the tying tally, as it fell, 3-2.
Mac Carruth got the win for Indy, making 25 saves on 27 shots. Franky Palazzese turned in a solid effort, blocking 33 of the 36 shots he faced, but was saddled with the loss.
The Nailers will return home for three straight games next weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It all starts with a Flat Screen Friday presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday, and the first 2,000 fans will receive a hat, courtesy of Main Street Bank. Then, Saturday is Pittsburgh Pirates Night with an appearance by Francisco Cervelli, and finally, Sunday is a Family Funday with McDonald's $5 kids tickets and a post game skate with the team.
