Roache Plays Hero as Dogs Take Down RailCats in Extras

GARY, Ind. - Victor Roache delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the tenth, and the Chicago Dogs kept their place as Kings of the North with a 5-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Monday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The slugger from Georgia Southern was clutch yet again, delivering his second game-winning hit in extras of the season. Roache finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk and one RBI, and he extended his team-best hitting streak to 12 games.

Dogs starter D.J. Snelten was dominant, surrendering one earned run out of the three that Gary scored while striking out seven, outdueling RailCats starter Lars Liguori in the second matchup between the two pitchers.

Gary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Marcus Mooney scored on a wild pitch to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead.

In the seventh and eighth innings, Kyle Halbohn kept Gary scoreless and hitless to keep the game tied at three. He struck out three batters and walked one in his third appearance of the season.

Before extras, Chicago scored all three of their runs in the third inning. The first two came off the bat of Kelly Dugan, as he roped a single that scored David Olmedo-Barrera and Larry Balkwill. Tony Rosselli broke out of a slump one batter later to score Dugan with a single of his own.

The RailCats knotted the game up in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of an RBI single by Thomas Walraven and run-scoring fielder's choice forced by catcher Wilfredo Gimenez.

Victor Roache played hero with two on in the top of the tenth, driving a 1-1 pitch out of the hand of Kaleb Fontenot (L, 0-2) into the outfield to score Kelly Dugan and give the Dogs a 4-3 lead. On the throw into the infield, however, Gimenez couldn't come up with it cleanly, allowing Tony Rosselli to score the unearned run that put the Dogs up by two.

After Rich Mascheri and Brandon Shimo (W, 1-0) combined for a scoreless ninth inning, Josh Goossen-Brown picked up his fourth save of the season, surrendering only one single to Tom Walraven.

The Dogs are back in action on Tuesday against the RailCats. First pitch is set for 7:10 PM as Luke Westphal (2-0) tries to continue his scoreless start to the season against Robbie Coursel (2-0).
