Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen traveled to Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids for the first time this year and brought home a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon. Jake Allen stopped 36 of 38 shots for his eighth win in nine starts and Stefan Della Rovere tallied the game-winning goal early in the third to bring the Rivermen to within one point of division-leading San Antonio.
The Griffins were the first to get on the board when Brad Radeke coverted on an awkward bounce off the boards behind the net Allen at 6:59. Peoria's pass around the back of the net hit a break in the boards and bounced back to Raedeke who was able to put the puck past Allen for his third of the year.
The Rivermen responded at 10:25 on Anthony Peluso's first goal and point of the year. Nathan Oystrick's shot from the point rang off both posts and Peluso tapped home the loose puck in the crease. Phil McRae added the second assist on the goal.
Grand Rapids scored their fifth shorthanded goal of the year on a breakaway from Jamie Tardif at 11:12 of the second. Tardif beat Allen through the five-hole for his seventh of the year assisted by Joakim Andersson and Cory Emmerton.
The Rivermen answered back on McRae's seventh of the year, which is tied for the team lead, at 13:52. Ryan Reaves made a pass from the far corner to the near circle and McRae made no mistake burying the goal that tied the game at two. The goal gave McRae 13 points, which leads all rookies on the Rivermen.
The Rivermen scored the only goal of the third which gave them the lead for first time of the game on Della Rovere's third of the year at 6:38. The line of rookies all earned a point on the goal with Tyler Shattock and Anthony Nigro adding assists. Della Rovere beat Grand Rapids goaltender Thomas McCollum up high over the blocker for his seventh point of the year.
Della Rovere's goal proved to be the winner and capped off a 2-0-1 weekend for Peoria. The Rivermen were outshot 38-29, but they killed off all four Griffins power plays bringing the streak to 34 consecutive penalty kills.
Allen's win pushed his record to 8-1-0 with a goals-against average of 1.27 and his save percentage is now 0.962%. It was his fourth straight win as he pushed Peoria to 5-0-1 over their last six games.
The Rivermen travel to Hamilton to play the Bulldogs on Friday at 6 p.m. The game can be heard locally on 96.5 ESPN Radio or online on www.rivermen.net. After a Saturday night contest against Lake Erie, the Rivermen will return to Carver Arena for a 5:05p.m. showdown with the Milwaukee Admirals. All kids tickets are available for just $1 and hot dogs, chips and Cokes will be sold for $1 each from 4-5 p.m.
