Whale Swim Past Phantoms

The Adirondack Phantoms ran into strong goaltending for the second night in a row as they fell at the Connecticut Whale 3-0 Sunday evening. Cameron Talbot turned aside all 25 Phantoms' drives for the win. It was the first meeting of the season between the Phantoms and the Hartford, CT based AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers in their opening weekend with their new team name.

Goalie Nic Riopel was keeping the Phantoms in the game with a shutout performance through the first two periods. The scoreless duel was finally snapped four minutes into the third period on a goal by Kris Newberry. Evgeni Gratchev and Chad Kolarik also scored for the Whale.

The Phantoms were not without their chances as they outshot Connecticut 25-21 in the game including 11-8 in the second period. Talbot was strong and made several good saves while the defense blocked many other drives. The Phantoms were a hard-working group throughout the game and kept doing many of the little things necessary but were still unable to capitalize on the opportunities in front of the net.

The game was a homecoming of sorts for Phantoms interim Head Coach John Paddock who was a head coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack a decade ago which included a Calder Cup Championship here in 2000. It was Paddock's fifth (as both a coach and player) and last Calder Cup title.

The game concluded a stretch of four games in five days for the Phantoms and was also their second game of a five game road-swing.

Before the game it was announced that goalie Brian Stewart had been recalled from Greenville (SC) of the ECHL. Stewart was with his Greenville team on the road in Wheeling (WV) and caught a flight out of Pittsburgh earlier in the morning to meet the team in Hartford.

Goalie Johan Backlund took a lower body injury at Hershey on Saturday night and is expected to be out for at least a couple weeks.

Adirondack concludes their tough stretch of four games in five nights with a Sunday evening encounter at the Connecticut Whale at 5pm. The game against the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers is also game two of a five game road swing for the Phantoms.

Adirondack's next home is Saturday, December 11 against the Portland Pirates featuring the team's first annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans get to bring their teddy bear donations for the Salvation Army to the game and throw them on the ice after the Phantoms score their first goal.
