Florence Y'alls News Release
Rockford, IL-The Florence Freedom(42-37)saw a 10-2 lead disappear Tuesday night as the Rockford RiverHawks(34-45) stormed back for an 11-10 win at RiverHawks Stadium. The comeback victory for Rockford was their third this year when trailing by seven or more runs.
The Freedom had leads of 5-0, 8-2, and 10-2 before Rockford made their comeback. With the Freedom leading 10-2 in the 6th with one out, Alec Lewis gave up three consecutive singles to Michael Hur, Matt Greener and Trevor Whyte. Brandon Anderson then doubled home two runs to cut the lead to 10-4. Mike Thomas followed with a SAC FLY to slice the lead in half at 10-5. Justino Cuevas then came through with an RBI single to bring the RiverHawks within 10-6. Lewis left the game with a four run lead, however he ended up earning a no decision after pitching 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits on 6 earned runs.
The RiverHawks continued their improbable comeback in the 8th inning. With two runners on and one out, Cuevas smacked a ground rule double down the left field line scoring Brandon Anderson to make it 10-7. The next batter Ted Obregon grounded out to first, however that produced a run and the RiverHawks were only down 10-8. Jimmy Parque then followed by grounding one to third baseman Peter Fatse. Fatse's throwing error to first base enabled Cuevas to score to cut the lead to 10-9. Evan Butten then tied the game at 10-10 as he stroked a double scoring Parque.
The RiverHawks then came back in the 9th against reliever Brennan Flick and put the first three on base. Greener and Whyte each singled while Anderson walked. With the bases loaded and nobody out and the infield drawn in, Greg Van Horn who entered the game as a defensive substitution in the previous inning recorded the game winning hit scoring Greener. Flick(6-2) took the loss after not retiring a batter in the 9th. Mickey Cassidy(3-2) earned the win after striking out two in the 9th.
Fatse led the Freedom offense as he went 3-4 with 4 RBI. Fatse hit his 7th homerun of the season, a two run shot in the 6th inning. He also had two RBI doubles. David Harris, Junior Arrojo, Drew Rundle, Jim Jacquot, and Kyle Bluestein all chipped in with two hits apiece. The Freedom were outhit 18-14 in the slugfest.
The Freedom will look to bounce back Wednesday night in game two of the three game series with Rockford. RHP Brandon Mathes(2-0, 3.49) will start for the Freedom while RHP Cody Calahan(5-6 4.72) starts for the RiverHawks.
