Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - A day after setting a team record for hits and tying a season high in runs, The Traverse City Beach Bums came out swinging again, garnering 16 hits en route to a 9-1 win over the Joliet Slammers.
The Beach Bums wasted no time in getting on the board as in the bottom of the first inning Ryan Still led off with a triple and Brian Heere brought him home on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. In the second with two outs, Sean Gusrang singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Marcus Nidiffer stepped to the dish and singled through the middle to score Gusrang and make it 2-0. Kyle Eveland moved Nidiffer to third with a double and Still brought both runners home with a single to right upping the lead to 4-0.
Not stopping there, Traverse City put to more runs on the board in the fourth as Eveland led off with a walk and stole second. A fly out by Still moved him to third before Heere doubled Eveland home, making it 5-0. Jose Vargas got in on the fun as he singled home Heere to put the lead to six. Joliet would get their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth as Eric McGee hit his second long ball with the Slammers to make it 6-1.
The Beach Bums would put the game away in the seventh when a single by Kyle Colligan and a double by Gusrang put two runners on for Nidiffer who hit his second homer in as many nights to cement the 9-1 final.
For the second straight ballgame, the Beach Bums got a good pitching performance as well as Brooks Belter (9-2) got the win going five innings surrendering one run while striking out six. The relief corps was as good as they could possibly be as the combination of Nick Capito and Jake Sabol retired all 12 batters they faced with Capito whiffing four of his six.
Offensively, Heere and Gusrang had three hits each. It marked the sixth consecutive multi-hit game for Heere. Kyle Colligan had a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to nine games while Chase Burch, Still and Nidiffer had two base knocks each.
The series wraps up on Thursday with a 2-for-1 Thirsty Thursday at Wuerfel Park. Fans will receive 2-for-1 pricing on all chairback seats as well as a dollar off fountain drinks and beer. Jacob Clem (6-4, 2.77) will get the start for the Beach Bums against Jacob Sanchez (4-1, 1.61) for Joliet. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
