AVON, Ohio - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, broke a tie with a ninth-inning run to defeat the Lake Erie Crushers 3-2 on Wednesday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The CornBelters struck first for the second straight night, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Sam Judah led off with a single followed by a walk to Randy Wells. A balk sent the runners to second and third, and Judah scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Bubby Williams.

The Belters added a run in the sixth as singles from Bobby Rinard, Pat McKenna and Steven Felix loaded the bases. A line-out double play erased McKenna, but Judah dropped a base hit to center to score Rinard and advance the lead to 2-0.

The Crushers cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, as J.C. Figueroa led off with a base hit, stole second, went to third after a fly ball and scored on a ground out by Jason Taylor.

The hosts received some help from the guests to tie the game at 2-2 in the seventh. Wally Correa looped a one-out single to center and took second when the ball was bobbled, then took third and home on two wild pitches.

The CornBelters pushed ahead in the ninth when pinch-hitter Trey Manz led off with a double followed by a bunt single by Jesse Olivar to put runners at the corners. Bobby Rinard bunted deep to the right side of the infield to squeeze Manz from third with the go-ahead run.

Kaleb Engelke (1-0) earned the win in relief, while Mitch Mormann pitched the final frame for his first save. Mickey Jannis (1-4) took the loss.

The brief three-game road trip concludes on Thursday evening in suburban Cleveland as the CornBelters send right-hander Brendon Smith (2-5, 3.69 ERA) to face Crushers righty Pat Arnold (0-0, 1.78 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 5:50 with a 6:05 Central first pitch at All Pro Freight Stadium.
