Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-44) @ TRAVERSE CITY BEACH BUMS (51-28)
Wednesday, August 15 - 6:05 p.m. CT
Wuerfel Park - Traverse City, MI
Game #80 - Road Game #38 (35-44), (17-20)
RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (6-7, 3.60 ERA) vs. RHP #17 Brooks Belter (8-2, 3.56 ERA)
Last time out...
Joliet lost 18-1 last night. An Abel Nieves sac fly made it 1-0 Joliet. From there, the Beach Bums went on to score 18 runs off Joliet pitching. Chase Burch tied things up in the bottom of the first on a single, and they pulled ahead in the second when Ryan Still singled to bring around Marcus Nidiffer. Nidiffer paid it forward in the third when he launched a grand slam to take a 6-1 lead. Ryan Still notched an RBI in the fourth, and three more came around in the sixth for a 10-1 tally. Traverse City continued their offensive assault in the eighth inning, bringing eight runs home for the game's 18-1 final. Every Beach Bum tacked on a hit in the contest, and all but one had at least one RBI. Jim Schult struggled in the start, surrendering seven runs through five innings. Rey Cotilla gave up three runs in the seventh, and Mike Barsotti took the brunt of Traverse City's force in the eighth and allowed eight.
For Starters...
Steven Maxwell is coming a rain delay shortened outing on August 9 against the Road Warriors. He went three scoreless innings, giving up two hits in a no-decision. The Slammers eventually won 6-0. In Maxwell's seven losses this season, the Slammers are averaging two runs a game. He is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA in two starts against Traverse City. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
A rough loss...
The 18 runs the Slammers gave up last night were the most they've surrendered in one game in franchise history.
Netzel heating up...
Brad Netzel is currently working on a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 22 of the team's past 24 games. He had the only two hits last night for Joliet.
Series success...
The Slammers have won three straight series and eight of their last 10 games. If they win this series against Traverse City, it would be the first time all season the Slammers have won four straight series.
Five or more...
Joliet 22-11 when scoring 5 or more runs in a game. They are 13-33 when scoring fewer than 5 runs.
Walk this way...
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 50 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 32 times in 270 at bats.
Error indicator...
Joliet is 11-31 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not.
Transaction Wire...
The Slammers activated catcher Matt Mirabal from the 7-Day DL today.
