Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, WV - The Charleston RiverDogs' bats were mostly quiet on Friday night, but a pair of timely hits would prove the difference as the RiverDogs edged out a 2-1 victory over the West Virginia Power at Appalachian Power Park. For the second straight night, the RiverDogs were outhit by the Power, but got the victory as they secured at least a split of their final series of the first half.

The RiverDogs (41-26) were held hitless by West Virginia (34-33) righty Logan Sendelbach (4-2) through the first three innings. After failing to capitalize on a bases loaded chance drawn by three walks in the fourth, Charleston cashed in with some timely hits in the fourth. With one out, Jhalan Jackson doubled to left. On the next play, Angel Aguilar stroked an RBI single that was mishandled in left by Casey Hughston that allowed the RiverDogs third baseman to advance to second. The extra 90 feet proved the difference as Leonardo Molina would drive Aguilar home on a single to left after Nathan Mikolas grounded out to second.

Charleston starter Yefrey Ramirez (4-1) continued to pound the strike zone, and ended the night with another solid outing characteristic of the RiverDogs deep pitching staff. The Dominican righty logged 5.1 scoreless innings allowing just five hits without walking a batter and striking out seven while throwing 63 of his 93 pitches for strikes.

In the sixth, West Virginia Mitchell Tolman reached on a single to right and moved all the way to third on a pair of stolen bases. Manolo Reyes would make his 2016 debut and pitch out of the jam after giving up an infield single on a weak ground ball to third that Aguilar double clutched on trying to hold the runner at third. With runners at the corners, Reyes punched out Hughston and got a ground ball out for Ryan Nagle to maintain the two run lead.

In the eighth, West Virginia got to Reyes to trim the lead to one. Logan Hill drew a leadoff walk and Christian Kelley reached first on a bunt before the pair advanced to second and third on a sacrifice by Power shortstop Tyler Filliben. Tito Polo would ground out to short to make it 2-1.

Willie Gabay notched a 1-2-3 eighth to set up Andrew Schwaab who picked up his league leading 14th save of the season after issuing a one out hit by pitch and a single in the final frame.
