Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Four doubles and 10 hits by the Kannapolis Intimidators was a recipe for success Friday night at First Energy Park in a 7-3 win against the Lakewood BlueClaws. Eight out of the nine Intimidators (24-44) starters collected a hit in a break out night offensively.
The seven runs were the most scored by the Intimidators since a 10-7 win in Asheville on May 19.
Luis Martinez took the ball for Kannapolis, and made his third career start against the BlueClaws (27-40). Martinez (2-6) worked five innings, gave up six hits, walked none, and struck out four to earn his first career win against Lakewood.
The righty's only blemish was a two-run second inning. Grenny Cummana doubled to left to bring home two runs and give the BlueClaws their only lead of the night.
Lakewood's starter Jose Taveras (2-6) was an enigma to Intimidators hitters through his first three innings of work. The righty faced the minimum through the third, as Kannapolis was held to just an Antonio Rodriguez walk. In the top of the fourth, Kannapolis pushed across their first run of the night on a Seby Zavala sacrifice fly.
In the top of the fifth, the Intimidators exploded for their largest inning of the road trip. Kannapolis sent seven men to the plate, tallying five hits in the inning and scoring four runs. Danny Mendick started the rally with a leadoff double and scored two batters later on a Bradley Strong RBI single. Kyle Ruchim continued to move the line for Kannapolis with a double to center, and came around to score on a Landon Lassiter sacrifice fly.
The Intimidators tacked on two more runs in the sixth, receiving an RBI double from Cody Daily and a sacrifice fly from Strong.
Daily and Mendick each had a multi-hit night going 2-for-4 with a double. Mendick scored twice while Daily crossed the plate once and also drove in a run. Not to be lost in the shuffle was Strong's two RBI night, his first of the season.
Tanner Mendonca, Jack Charleston, and Taylore Cherry preserved the lead with four strong innings of relief. The only run allowed by the Intimidators bullpen was a solo home run to Jose Pujols in the sixth inning, his 11 of the year.
The win is the first of the road trip for Kannapolis and snaps their season long eight game losing streak.
The Intimidators continue the seven game road trip with the third game of this four set against the Lakewood BlueClaws Saturday night at 7:05 pm. Kannapolis will send RHP Chris Comito(1-6, 6.10 ERA) to the mound against Lakewood's RHP Luke Leftwich (6-3, 2.15 ERA). The Intimidators return home for a seven game home stand beginning June 23 against the Delmarva Shorebirds following the All-Star break.
