Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC- The South Atlantic League game between the Charleston RiverDogs and the Savannah Sand Gnats was halted due to rain in the bottom of the fourth inning on Sunday evening. The weather didn't clear up, unfortunately, and forced the game to be suspended. It will be resumed in Savannah on Monday, June 11.
The game was stopped in the bottom of the fourth inning with Savannah leading 1-0 and two men on base for Charleston, one out and Angelo Gumbs at the plate with a 2-0 count. It will be restarted at that point in Savannah.
RiverDogs starter Evan Rutckyj was touched by Savannah for the game's first run in the third inning. Brandon Brown singled to start the inning and, after a base hit and a groundout, moved to third. Travis Taijeron then hit deep fly ball to center and Brown scored after the catch. The Sand Gnats threatened again in the fourth, putting two men, but didn't score thanks in part to a magnificent defensive play by Mason Williams in center field. Gilbert Gomez hit a long fly to center that looked like an extra base hit, but Williams raced back and made a basket catch in center with his back to plate, keeping the score at 1-0. It was during the next half inning that the rains came and forced the tarp to be brought out.
Fans holding tickets for this game may exchange them for tickets of equal or lesser value to any upcoming RiverDogs regular season game in 2012, with the exception of the game on July 3rd.
BALLPARK FUN: Rock-n-roll legend Alice Cooper was at The Joe for the game and threw out a ceremonial first pitch to get the day started.
COMING UP: The RiverDogs will hit the road tomorrow for a road trip, starting in Savannah with a doubleheader that will begin with the resumption of this game. The pitchers for the first are TBD. Charleston's RHP Wilton Rodriguez (1-2, 6.37 ERA) is taking the ball against RHP Logan Verrett (1-0, 2.33 ERA) in game two of the twin bill. On June 19, five RiverDogs will be in action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in the 53rd annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, presented by General Dynamics Land Systems Force Protection Industries, Inc. and Charleston Restaurant Association. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 pm. Among the festivities is the Miller High Life Home Run Derby on the deck of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point on June 18. The derby is scheduled to start at 11am. The RiverDogs next home game will be on June 25 against Savannah starting at 7:05 pm.
