Shorebirds Fall 4-2 in Series Finale

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (26-36) gave up two late runs and dropped the series finale to the Lakewood BlueClaws (21-41) by a final of 4-2 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The BlueClaws built an early 2-0 in the first inning. Shorebirds starter Parker Bridwell hit Kyrell Hudson with a breaking ball on a 1-2 pitch. Then, Maikel Franco hit a two-run home run to left field to put Lakewood in front.

The Shorebirds responded with a run in the first inning. Sammie Starr, who scored both runs, reached on a single. He advanced to second on a balk and scored a sharp double to the left field corner by Jason Esposito.

The Shorebirds tied the game in the fifth inning. Starr started the inning with a double. Starr tagged up and advanced to third on a fly ball deep to right field by Mikey Planeta. Then, Esposito hit a fly ball to left-center that scored Starr.

In the sixth inning, Devin Jones entered for Bridwell, who did not allow a run in his final four innings of work. With two outs, Aaron Altherr singled and stole second base. Then, Bob Stumpo singled into left-center field to give the 'Claws a 3-2 lead.

Lakewood added a run in the ninth on a triple down the right field line by Stephen Malcolm.

The Shorebirds did not score in the final four innings.

Lakewood starter Ethan Stewart earned the win over six strong innings. He gave up only three hits. Shorebirds reliever Devin Jones was pinned with the loss. He yielded three hits and two runs over four innings.

The Shorebirds travel to Lakewood, NJ for a four-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Monday, June 11 at 6:05pm.
