Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets set new single-game totals in hits and runs scored for the second time this series, eclipsing marks that had stood for less than 48 hours in a 19-7 thrashing of the Rome Braves on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the GreenJackets took two of three from the Braves and have now won five of their last six.
The GreenJackets batted around in the second, with five consecutive hits to open the frame, taking a commanding 6-0 lead early on. With the bases full and no one out, Joe Staley doubled home a pair of runs off the left field wall to give the GreenJackets a two-run lead. Brett Krill singled to bring home another run and make it a 3-0 edge for the GreenJackets. After a walk loaded the bases, Kelby Tomlinson's sacrifice fly made it a four-run lead. Later in the inning, Shawn Payne singled home two more to round out the six-run frame.
Rome rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning and made it a ballgame after the third. Two wild pitches and an error accounted for the three-run Braves second while the Braves made it a 6-4 game on Will Skinner's RBI double an inning later.
The GreenJackets padded their lead and ran away with the game in the fifth, batting around for the second time and starting a string of five consecutive innings with at least one run scored. Augusta scored 13 unanswered runs at one point, beginning with the fifth. Wes Hodges drilled a two-run homer, Krill doubled home a pair and Elliott Blair doubled home Krill to cap the frame and give the GreenJackets an 11-4 lead.
The scoring continued in the sixth with an error bringing in a run and three more scoring on Krill's three-run homer - his first of the year. All told, Krill would finish the day with five hits and seven RBI's - tying Garrett Buechele's single-game highs this season in hits and RBI's. The GreenJackets got two more on a sacrifice fly and a groundout in the seventh and got runs in the eighth and ninth innings on RBI singles by Jose Flores and Krill respectively.
After Augusta starting pitcher Joe Biagini was chased in the third inning, Derek Law came out of the GreenJackets bullpen to steady the ship in one of his finest outings of the season. In 3.2 scoreless innings, Law (4-0) allowed two hits and no walks while striking out seven.
The Braves got three runs in the ninth inning on a Tony Mueller RBI single and Brandon Drury's two-run double but a groundout ended the game and sealed Augusta's 12-run margin of victory - tied for Augusta's largest of the season.
19 GreenJackets runs set a new single-game high in runs scored while 24 hits set a new-single game mark in that category - breaking records set in Friday's series opener. In addition to being a single-game high for the GreenJackets, the 24 hits tied a single-game high by any team in the South Atlantic League this season.
The GreenJackets and Braves shift their home-and-home series back to Augusta on another Feed Your Face Monday, opening a three-game series between the teams at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Select concessions items will be available at no extra cost from 6 p.m. until the end of the sixth inning. Clayton Blackburn (2-2, 3.04) takes the mound for the GreenJackets in the opener and will face David Filak (3-5, 4.67). First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
