SALISBURY, MD. - Bob Stumpo's single in the 6th inning scored Aaron Altherr from second base with two outs to break a 2-2 tie and give the BlueClaws the lead in their 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Purdue Stadium over the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Stumpo finished the game 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored as he helped the BlueClaws snap a four-game losing streak overall and a nine-game road losing streak.
Starting pitcher Ethan Stewart earned the victory by giving up two runs over six innings of work. Stewart was winless in his first 10 starts in 2012- posting a record of 0-6- but has won consecutive starts and has an ERA of 3.98.
Maikel Franco got the scoring started for the BlueClaws in the 1st inning when he smacked his sixth home run of the season off starting pitcher Parker Bridwell who was making his third start against Lakewood. Franco's homer scored Kyrell Hudson who led-off the game with a hit-by-pitch to give Lakewood a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game.
Stephen Malcolm contributed an RBI triple in the top of the 9th inning as an insurance run to pad the BlueClaws one-run lead to give Mike Nesseth some breathing room entering the bottom of the 9th. Nesseth allowed a one-out single to allow the tying run to come to the plate with one out, but he bared down to get the final two outs and record his second save of the season.
The BlueClaws and Shorebirds will both board busses and hit the road to Lakewood, N.J. to begin a four-game-in-three-days series at FirstEnergy Park. Monday will feature a double-header with Colin Kleven (3-5, 3.90) starting Game 1 for the BlueClaws and reliever Yari Sosa (0-1, 7.11) getting his first start for Lakewood in Game 2. First pitch for Monday's Game 1 is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
