Intimidators Pitchers Set the Suns to Avoid Sweep

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 10, 2012) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators quieted the Hagerstown Suns and avoided a series sweep with a 6-2 win on Sunday evening at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis (29-34) snapped a six-game losing streak while Hagerstown (38-24) saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.

Starting pitchers Scott Snodgress and Matt Purke each opened the game with three scoreless, hitless inning, but Kannapolis jumped in front with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Chris Devenski (4-1) earned the win with 2 and 2/3 scoreless relief innings, and Jason Van Skike spun two scoreless frames for the save (1). Intimidators pitchers combined to strike out 10 Suns batters on the day. Purke (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

In the home half of the fourth, Ross Wilson was hit by a pitch and scored from first base on Mark Haddow's two-out double. Purke walked Grant Bucker and Leighton Pangilinan, loading the bases for Martin Medina. Medina singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Haddow and Bucker for a 3-0 lead.

Hagerstown retaliated in the top of the fifth. Snodgress walked a batter and hit another before giving up a run-scoring double to Brian Goodwin. Snodgress walked the next batter to load the bases and was lifted from the game. Devenski struck out the next batter but walked in a run before getting out of the inning with Kannapolis ahead, 3-2. Snodgress finished the game matching a season-high with six strikeouts.

The Intimidators tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth when Ross Wilson scored on a Cutter Dykstra throwing error.
