CHARLESTON, SC -- Right fielder Evan Tierce collected three hits and drove home three runs as the Charleston RiverDogs scalped the Rome Braves, 6-1, in South Atlantic League action Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs rebounded successfully from Thursday night's 10-2 thumping by the Braves, Charleston's most lopsided loss of the season thanks in large part to a five-run eighth inning that broke open a 1-1 tie.

With the victory, Charleston improves to 5-3 in the second half (48-29) while Rome falls to 2-6 (41-35). The win also gave the RiverDogs a nearly-spotless 42-1 mark when leading after eight innings.

With the scored tied at 1 apiece, Charleston started the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tierce singled through the right side and scored Ryan Haag and William Plaza. Marcos Vechionacci's RBI double plated Tim Battle, and shortstop Hector Made drove home two more runs with a single through the left side.

After three scoreless innings, Rome broke through with the game's first score when DH James Barksdale singled through the left side and drove home Carlos Guzman who singled, moved to second on a passed ball and then stole third base.

The RiverDogs knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tierce doubled to right field and scored Battle, who had walked.

Charleston starter Phil Coke went six full innings and allowed six hits and one unearned run while striking out one Brave. He was relieved by Brandon Harmsen, who earned his second win of the season against no losses. While tossing the final three innings, Harmsen permitted only one hit, struck out three and walked one. He has a victory in each of his two Charleston appearances this season.

Rome's second pitcher, Jonathan Venters, suffered the loss which dropped his record to 5-4 on the season as he pitched 1.2 innings and allowed all five eighth-inning runs on four hits.

Game Three of this four-game set continues Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as Eric Hacker (4-2) toes the slab for Charleston while Matt Harrison (7-3) gets the call for Rome.
