Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-A late-inning rally was not enough for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, to overcome a three-run deficit, falling to the visiting River City Rascals by a final score of 3-1. Rascals starter Kyle Brady earned his first victory of the 2014 season, while Scott Dunn suffered the loss for Washington.
River City took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when right fielder Jon Myers knocked a single into the outfield turf to score second baseman Hector Crespo who reached earlier in the inning with a triple. The Rascals added to the deficit in the top of the seventh when designated hitter Joe Staley belted a run-scoring double to make it 2-0.
Despite giving up ten hits, Dunn worked efficiently and held River City to just two runs in his 6 2/3 inning performance. Dunn maneuvered his way out of a few jams in the early innings and struck out three Rascals on the night.
On the other side of the mound, Brady cut through the Washington offense, striking out five in six innings and surrendering just two hits: a single by right fielder Scott Kalamar in the first and a single by left fielder Garrett Rau in the sixth. Brady recorded four-consecutive one-two-three innings as he worked his way to his first victory of the season.
After River City extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the ninth thanks to another run-scoring single by Myers, Washington turned on the offense and began their push for a final at-bat comeback. A pinch-hit homer from Jose Dore began the ninth, followed by a single from Rau and a hit-by-pitch dealt to Kalamar. River City closer Gabriel Shaw ended the party, however, with shutdown pitching that earned him his 24th save of the year.
Washington returns to action on Friday, August 22 when they play hosts to the Gateway Grizzlies for a three-game weekend series. First pitch for Friday's contest is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Wild Things will also be retiring former player Chris Sidick's number in a pre-game ceremony on Friday. For tickets, call 724-250-9555.
