Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-lost to Rockford 5-1 on Thursday at Silver Cross Field.
Rockford broke a 0-0 tie with a 3-run 3rd inning off of Matt Crim. There were two walks and an error in the inning as well as a RBI double from Dusty Robinson and a sacrifice fly from Kenny Bryant. Crim walked three, allowed two doubles and a triple and was lifted after those three innings. Andrew Strenge came on in relief. Meanwhile, Rockford starter Ryan Zimmerman was rolling early. He allowed just one hit through four innings with five strikeouts. Joliet finally got to Zimmerman in the 5th as Adam Giacalone singled to start the inning. He would eventually score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it 3-1. Strenge and Jordan Wellander pitched well in relief for Joliet. Strenge pitched three shutout innings and Wellander pitched a scoreless 7th before taking himself out in the middle of the 8th with what appeared to be a sore shoulder. The Aviators scored twice in the 8th on an error and a passed ball. Sam Moore closed out that inning and then pitched the 9th. Russell Moldenhauer sat out the game after spraining his ankle on Wednesday. With the win, the Aviators sweep the three-game series from Joliet. It is the first time they have swept a series of any kind since late August of 2012. Zimmerman earned the win, striking out seven in 7 innings. Former Lewis University Flyers pitcher Matt Frahm pitched a scoreless 8th and then Gerardo Sanchez closed it out in the 9th.
In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $250 to lucky fan, Kathy Brown, as part of their Amazing August promotion. Each home game in August will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.
Joliet spends the weekend at Windy City before returning home for a season-ending nine-game home-stand, beginning with a 2-dollar Tuesday on August 26th. Awareness Wednesday will be followed by a Thirsty Thursday that will also be JackHammers Day. So break out your old JackHammers gear and celebrate the beginnings of Pro Baseball in Joliet. Slammers action this season is broadcast live on 1340 WJOL and wjol.com. The audio/video feed of home games this season can be seen for free at independentprofessionalbaseball.com.
