Grizzlies Collect Comeback Win against Crushers

AVON, OH - The Gateway Grizzlies scored three runs in the ninth inning and picked up a 6-4 comeback win against the Lake Erie Crushers Thursday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

Trailing 4-3 into the ninth inning, TJ Bennett started the Grizzlies (47-37) comeback with a one-out double. Richard Seigel drove in the game-tying run with a pinch-hit double and Michael Johnson followed with an RBI triple to push Gateway ahead 5-4. Johnson eventually scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-4.

Johnson led off the game with a solo home run, his third of the season, to give Gateway a 1-0 lead.

Lake Erie (49-34) scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Hutchison hit a solo home run and Trevor Stephens brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth inning, Madison Beaird brought in a run on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 2-2.

Lake Erie scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning on a Vincent Mejia two-run single before Gateway moved within a run on a sixth inning wild pitch to make it 4-3.

Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West picked up a no-decision, despite allowing just two earned runs on four hits in seven innings. West picked up seven strikeouts.

Brett Zawacki (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to collect the win and Richard Barrett recorded his 19th save of the season.

Johnson went 3-for-5 to lead the Grizzlies offense.

The Grizzlies road trip continues Friday night at Washington. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (8-3) makes the start for Gateway at 6:05 CST.
