Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a tie-breaking homer in the middle innings for the second straight night and did not recover in a 9-7 loss to the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night at the Corn Crib.
The Boomers struck right away in the first inning as an error on a potential double play ball and a wild pitch combined with an RBI single from Tony Delmonico and a two-run double by Mark Nelson established a quick 3-0 lead.
The CornBelters bounced back in their opening frame extended by an outfield error. Pat McKenna led off with a single and went to third on a double by Mike Schwartz, then scored on a dropped fly ball hit to center by Sam Judah. Schwartz went to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Dudley to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Schaumburg countered with a run in the second inning when Michael Valadez was hit by a pitch to lead off, then went to third on a single by Jordan Dean and scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Alexi Colon to push the advantage back to 4-2.
McKenna evened the score a 4-4 with his sixth home run, a two-run drive over the right field fence in the second inning. The Boomers answered in the third when Delmonico received a lead-off walk, stole second, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a Nelson single to regain a 5-4 lead.
The CornBelters tied the game at 5-5 with an unearned run in their third inning when Aaron Dudley went to second on a misplayed grounder to first, then scored on a double over the left field wall by Ozney Guillen.
The Boomers took advantage of two walks and a bobble on a double play turn to extend the fifth inning for Gerard Hall to pound his second three-run homer in as many nights to put the guests ahead 8-5. Schaumburg added a run in the sixth when Colon drew a one-out walk, went to second on a Joe DePinto single and scored on an RBI base hit by Justin Vasquez.
The Belters scored a pair in the ninth with and RBI double by Dudley and a fielder's choice RBI by Richard Lucas.
Seth Webster (6-4) earned the win while Stephen Frey (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The Belters continue the home stand with a weekend series with the Traverse City Beach Bums beginning with a 7 p.m. Friday first pitch on CEFCU Fireworks Friday with a post-game sky show. Lefty Matt Packer (3-2, 2.48 ERA) takes the ball for the CornBelters while the Bums send right-hander Casey Delgado (6-5, 3.33) to the mound.
