Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners dropped the third game of their three-game set against the Frontier Greys by a score of 8-3 at Rent One Park on Thursday night, as the visitors avoided a three-game sweep while Southern Illinois settled for a two-games-to-one series win.

The game was scoreless as Anthony Montefusco and Clint Wright (7-6) traded zeroes until the bottom of the fifth, when Chris Burke broke the ice and smashed a long solo homer leading off the inning over the wall in center field in front of the batter's eye to make it 1-0.

A leadoff double and an RBI single by Cameron Monger in the next half-inning tied it up at one, but Southern Illinois bounced back immediately. Matt Jones and Niko Vasquez led off with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the sixth, and Frank Martinez laid down a sacrifice and reached on a fielder's choice, with everyone making it safely to the next base when the pitcher's throw to third was not in time.

Aaron Gates grounded into a double play to bring the go-ahead run home, and Burke followed with a double to plate one more, making the score 3-1 Miners.

But the Greys would come all the way back in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on first, a walk and a two-run double tied the score. After a hit batter put runners on first and second, a fly ball to right-center field that would have been the final out of the inning dropped for an error, as both runners scored to give the Greys the lead. Monger would add a three-run homer in the ninth to complete the scoring.

Due to losses by Evansville, Lake Erie and Washington, the Miners remained in first place, however, and will look to get back on track on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Florence Freedom. Rick Teasley will pitch for the Miners against Florence's Peter Gehle.
