Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Daric Barton delivered a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning-his fifth of the season-to give the River Cats a 5-3 series-finale victory over the Reno Aces on U.S. Bank Sunday Funday at Raley Field.
Reno wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs in the first inning to take the early 2-0 lead. A double by Chris Owings to bring home Tony Campana, and RBI groundout to first off the bat of Mike Jacobs did the damage for the Aces. The Cats responded quickly, scoring off of a wild pitch from Reno starter Charles Brewer that allowed Grant Green to reach home safely from third base to cut the Sacramento deficit to one. Jemile Weeks followed up in the second inning to tie the game, driving home Ryan Ortiz with his 10th double of the season.
The Aces came back to tie the game in the eighth, scoring off of a double play. Once again Sacramento would respond in the bottom half of the inning, this time via a solo blast from Barton and a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Michael Choice. Brian Gordon finished off the game for the Cats in the ninth inning, striking out Brad Snyder to give Sacramento their 22nd win at home this season.
Pedro Figueroa scooped up the win for the Cats, pitching one inning of relief in the eighth to setup the Gordon save. Aces reliever Bryan Woodall was charged with the loss, giving up the Barton blast in the eighth inning and being responsible for the run off of the Choice sacrifice fly in the same inning.
Playing center field for the second night in a row, Weeks has now made his only two career starts in the outfield in the last two games. At the plate he is 2-for-8 with one RBI since taking over duties at center. Sacramento starter Bruce Billings retired 19 straight Reno hitters and throwing six-straight shutout innings after giving up two runs in the first in a no decision.
The River Cats continue their longest home stand of the season at Raley Field on Throwback Monday, welcoming the division-rival Tucson Padres to town. Lefty Justin Thomas (3-6, 4.48 ERA) will take the ball for the Cats, with Anthony Bass (1-1, 8.85 ERA) set to go for the Padres.
