Memphis Redbirds News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Cubs scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come-from-behind and beat the Memphis Redbirds 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series on Monday at Principal Park.
The four-run Cubs comeback spoiled another outstanding outing by Memphis starter Tyler Lyons, who came away with a no-decision after dominating the Cubs for a second consecutive start. The southpaw struck out nine over seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Lyons has now allowed three hits over 14.0 shutout innings in a pair of starts against Iowa since being optioned by St. Louis.
With the loss, Memphis (40-45) falls to three games behind Iowa in the PCL American Northern Division.
Memphis led for nearly the entire ballgame until Iowa plated four-runs against Fernando Salas and Sam Freeman in the bottom of the eighth. A missed catch error, slow infield dribbler off the third base bag, and two-run double by Anthony Giansanti quickly knotted the contest before Freeman gave up the go-ahead, two-run double over the diving Jamie Romak by Brad Nelson.
Salas (1-1) was charged with the blown save loss with four runs (one earned) in 2/3 of an inning. Freeman allowed both inherited runners to score before retiring the third out in the inning.
The Redbirds loaded the bases on three straight walks to open the game, but came away with only one run as Iowa starter Barret Loux escaped the jam. Brock Peterson's RBI grounder to third to score Tommy Pham accounted for the Redbirds' lone run.
Memphis added its other run in the seventh for a 2-0 advantage. With Lyons on base on a bunt force out, outfielder Tommy Pham lined an RBI triple to the center field wall.
Loux settled down to allow two hits and walk none over the next four scoreless innings. Former Redbird Eduardo Sanchez (1-1) worked around a walk and two hits for a shutout inning to pick up his first win as a Cub.
The Cardinals and Cubs affiliates continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Tuesday night at Principal Park. Right-hander Michael Wacha (4-1, 2.34) will start for Memphis and face Iowa righty Guillermo Moscoso (4-5, 4.81).
