Published on July 1, 2013 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Danny Duffy of the Omaha Storm Chasers and Grant Green of the Sacramento River Cats were the top players in the Pacific Coast League from June 24th to June 30th, and today the league office recognized their efforts with the Pitcher and Player of the Week awards respectively.
Duffy was perfect for the Storm Chasers last week as he went 2-0 in a start and a relief appearance. As a starter on Tuesday in Oklahoma City, the southpaw gave up just two hits and a walk and struck out four RedHawks over five innings of shutout ball. Out of the bullpen on Sunday in Omaha he was even more dominant, silencing the Iowa Cubs in over 5 2/3 innings allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Duffy's effort on Sunday was part of a combined five-hit shutout, the Storm Chasers fourth shutout of the season.
Duffy, born in Goleta, California, was a third-round draft pick by the Kansas City Royals in the 2007 MLB draft out of Cabrillo High School. He was a Futures Game selection in 2009 and was honored as a PCL Player of the Week in May of 2011, two weeks before making his Major League debut against the Texas Rangers. In five appearances (four starts) for Omaha this season, Duffy is 2-0 with a 5.66 ERA.
Green held the second highest average (.480) at the plate last week and paced the Pacific Coast League in total bases (24), slugging percentage (.960), OPS (1.460), and home runs (3). The infielder's six extra-base hits were tied for the league lead, as he added three doubles and six RBI. Green's week was highlighted by back-to-back 2-for-4 games against Colorado and Reno. Against Colorado, he had a double and a home run to go along with two RBI and then bested himself against Reno as he belted two homers and four RBI.
Born in Fullerton, California, Green was selected in the first round of the 2009 MLB draft out of the University of Southern California, where he was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection. He holds a career batting average of .305 in five minor league seasons, is a three-time MiLB.com Organization All-Star selection, and a two-time Futures Game selection. He is currently batting .322 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI in his second season in Sacramento.
