Round Rock Express News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An error in the bottom of the ninth allowed the game-winning run to score as the Round Rock Express (48-37) lost the series opener to the Nashville Sounds (30-55) 3-2 Monday night.
With the game tied at two and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Sounds plated the game-winner to edge the Express in the first of three road games for the E-Train.
The Round Rock bats started cold as Sounds starter R.J. Seidel carried a no-hitter through the first four innings. Nashville broke the scoreless draw in the bottom half of the fourth when second baseman Scooter Gennett blasted his second home run of the season to give the Sounds a 1-0 lead.
A two-out rally in the top of the fifth helped the Express not only break through on the scoreboard but take the lead. After Seidel retired the first two batters, he walked first baseman Jim Adduci. With a runner on first and two outs, designated hitter Mike Bianucci put Round Rock in front with one swing of the bat, launching a two-run shot to give the Express a 2-1 lead.
Express southpaw Ryan Feierabend held the Nashville offense in check, protecting the one-run lead until the bottom of the seventh when the Sounds used another long ball to tie the game. Nashville first baseman Hunter Morris picked on the first pitch he saw from Feierabend and deposited it over the left-center field wall for a solo blast to knot the game at two.
The Sounds began a rally of their own in the bottom of the eighth, threatening to push across the go ahead run after loading the bases with one out. Center fielder Caleb Gindl led off with a double while catcher Anderson De La Rosa reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and third. Feierabend then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed De La Rosa to move to second. The Express intentionally walked Gennett to load the bases before calling on reliever Cory Buns out of the bullpen. Burns, fresh off the disabled list, forced the first batter he faced to ground into a fielder's choice at the plate before getting designated hitter Robinzon Diaz to pop out to second, ending the threat.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth when left-hander Nate Robertson took over out of the Round Rock bullpen. The southpaw retired the first batter but allowed left fielder Khris Davis to reach on a single. One out later, Davis stole second to put himself in scoring position as the game-winning run. Davis' move proved to be costly to the Express as the Nashville left fielder scored the final run after Gindl reached on a fielding error by Solarte, giving the Sounds a 3-2 victory in the series opener.
Robertson (2-4) suffered the loss in relief while Nashville right-hander Kyle Heckathorn (5-2) picked up his fifth win after tossing a scoreless ninth.
The Express continues a three-game road trip with game two against the Sounds Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Josh Lindblom (7-0, 1.99 ERA) will take the hill for Round Rock to be opposed by Nashville starter Hiram Burgos (1-2, 1.99 ERA).
