Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento starter Andrew Werner had his best start of the season for the River Cats-surrendering one run and striking out six in 7.1 innings of work-during a 1-0 loss to the Reno Aces on Saturday night at Raley Field.

Both teams were kept scoreless through 5.0 innings, combining for 17 strikeouts off of the efforts of Werner and Reno starter Tyler Skaggs. Juan Riviera broke through for the Aces, bringing home Tyler Bortnick on an RBI groundout to first to give Reno a 1-0 lead.

The River Cats threatened to win the game in the ninth inning, putting men at second and third with two outs. After giving up two walks in the ninth inning, Skaggs was pulled in favor of Chaz Roe whose wild pitch to Luke Montz put Michael Choice and Grant Green in scoring position. That would be the closest the Cats would get to scoring, as Roe picked up his fourth save of the season with a strikeout of Montz to end the game.

Skaggs earned the win for Reno, posting his first shutout performance since opening the season on April 7 with a 6.0 innings scoreless start. His 13 strikeouts were a season high with Reno. Werner was the hard luck loser for the Cats, with the one run being the fewest he had surrendered in a loss this year.

Tonight's shutout loss by the Cats was their first since a 10-0 loss to Salt Lake on June 18, and first at home since falling 2-0 to New Orleans on May 22. With the defeat the Cats record for the month of June dropped to 12-15, ending their streak of 19-straight months of at least .500 baseball. The last time the River Cats did not finish a month with a .500 record was April of 2010.

The River Cats wrap up their four-game series against the Aces at Raley Field on U.S. Bank Sunday Funday. PCL wins leader Bruce Billings (9-4, 4.46 ERA) will get the start for the Cats, with right-hander Charles Brewer (3-7, 5.56 ERA) heading to the hill for Reno.
