Cubs Blanked by Storm Chasers

Papillion, NE - The Omaha Storm Chasers (36-47) avoided a sweep with a 3-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs (42-42) at Werner Park this afternoon. After 43 hits in the the first three games of this series, the Cubs were limited to five singles today while getting shut out for the eighth time this year. The Cubs won three of four in the series and lead the Storm Chasers 9-3 in the season series.

The Storm Chasers scored their runs early against Cubs' starter Brooks Raley. WIth runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Anthony Seratelli flared a single just over the head of second baseman Tim Torres that drove in two. In the bottom of the second, Willy Taveras led off with a single and scored on a two-out double by Chris Getz. Raley (6-6) would get through six innings to post his sixth quality start of the season, but suffered the loss. Marcus Hatley and Michael Bowden each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Cubs.

Kelvin Herrera, just optioned from Kansas City, would make his second start of the series as the Royals look to stretch out his pitch count. Herrera pitched just one inning on Thursday, but made it through three innings today and allowed two hits, no walks, and struck out one.

Danny Duffy (2-0) continued to handcuff the Cubs over the next 5.2 innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out seven. He had a chance to finish the game, but walked Ty Wright with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to reach his pitch limit. Louis Coleman came in to get the final out and earned his sixth save of the season.

The Cubs return home to start a three-game series against the Memphis Redbirds at Principal Park. Monday night's game will start at 7:05. RH Barret Loux (4-2, 4.84) will start for the Cubs against LH Tyler Lyons (3-1, 3.88) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
