Padres Get 21 Hits and Defeat Sky Sox, 14-1

The Tucson Padres (45-39) slugged seven doubles in a 14-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (45-37) at Security Service Field in the fifth and decisive game of the series.

Over the first three innings the two teams combined for one run on four hits. Tucson got that run in the third inning when Rene Rivera hit a RBI single to drive home Jonathan Galvez. After the third inning the game entered a 1 hour and 14 minute rain delay with the Padres up 1-0. Sky Sox starting pitcher Juan Nicasio came out of the game after the rain delay and went three innings with one walk and two strikeouts in his Triple-A debut.

Once the game resumed the Sky Sox managed to tie the game up at one in the bottom of the fourth when Ben Paulsen plated Charlie Blackmon who led off the inning with his 14th double of the season.

With the game tied at one the Padres exploded for three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to increase their lead to seven. Tucson continued to have the upper hand in the contest when they added one run in the eighth and five runs in the ninth to cap off their scoring at 14.

Padres' starting pitcher Sean O'Sullivan only allowed one hit before the stoppage, but Jorge Reyes (W, 5-3) gets the win after giving up one run and five hits in 1.2 innings of relief. For the Sky Sox, Mike McClendon (L,6-5) earned his fifth loss of the season after allowing three runs in two innings.

Tomorrow, Colorado Springs embarks on a brief three-game road trip, before returning home for 11 games, against the division-leading Tacoma Rainiers. Tacoma lost today to Las Vegas, 4-1 and the Sky Sox remain only two games back of their rival. Starting tomorrow for the Sky Sox will be Jeff Manship (3-6, 6.33) who returns to the team after spending time on the D.L. with a blister on his right hand. The righty will be facing top Mariners' prospect Taijuan Walker (1-0, 0.00) who threw six shutout innings in his season debut with Tacoma.

Sky Sox Notes: Charlie Blackmon hit another triple for the Sky Sox to increase their total to 55 on the season. The total leads professional baseball and is 19 short of the team's record of 74, which was set in 1992...Charlie Culberson went 0-4 to end his hit streak at 16, but Tim Wheeler extended his streak to 10 on a single in the ninth.
