June 30, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - The Iowa Cubs (42-41) won their third straight game with an 8-5 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers (35-47) at Werner Park tonight. The Cubs have a winning record for the first time this year and have clinched a series win in a road series for the first time this season. The Cubs lead this series 3-0 and lead the season series 8-3 over the Storm Chasers.
The Cubs got on the board in the second inning when Darnell McDonald smacked a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ty Wright. Logan Watkins added to the lead with a leadoff homer in the third inning off Storm Chasers' starter Chris Dwyer. It was Watkins' eighth homer of the year, one shy of his career-high.
The Storm Chasers tied the game with two runs off Cubs' starter Nick Struck in the bottom of the fifth, but the Cubs answered right back with two more runs in the top of the sixth. Donnie Murphy walked and scored when Dave Sappelt doubled into the left-center field gap. Junior Lake followed with an RBI single up the middle and the Cubs led 4-2.
Struck (5-5) allowed one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but finished the inning to post his fourth quality start of the season. He allowed eight hits and three walks, but also had two double plays turned behind him by the defense.
The Cubs extended the lead to 8-3 with four runs in the top of the eighth. McDonald led off with a double and Wright followed with a homer into the stands in left. It was his Wright's first home run with Iowa this season and he now has five RBI in the last two games. J.C. Boscan and Tim Torres followed with singles to knock reliever Buddy Baughmann out of the game. Donnie Joseph came in and allowed two more runs to score on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Jae-Hoon Ha. It was Ha's first RBI since joining Iowa last Saturday in Memphis.
Casey Coleman followed Struck with a scoreless seventh, but the Storm Chasers rallied against him in the eighth. Three straight singles loaded the bases before Coleman struck out Chase Lambin. A walk to Quintin Berry forced in one run and Paulo Orlando drove in another with a single off the glove of Coleman on the mound. Coleman turned the ball over to Brian Schlitter, who got Chris Getz to hit a ground ball to shortstop that turned into an inning-ending double play. Schlitter came back out and finished the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Cubs also added a game to their division lead as Memphis lost their second straight game at home to Albuquerque tonight. The Cubs lead the Redbirds by two games, matching their biggest lead of the season.
The Cubs and Storm Chasers wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 at Werner Park. LH Brooks Raley (6-5, 4.94) will start for the Cubs against RH Kelvin Herrera (0-1, 3.18) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 1:45.
