8-5 Defeat Seals First Ever Werner Park Series Loss to Iowa

OMAHA, Neb. - Despite racking up 14 hits, tied for the second most at home this season, the Omaha Storm Chasers (35-47) lost their third straight game to the division-leading Iowa Cubs (42-41) by a final score of 8-5. The loss seals a series win for the I-Cubs, the first time in six series between the I-80 rivals at Werner Park that has not resulted in a split.

The game stood at 4-3 entering the eighth inning, but the Cubs proceeded to send nine batters to the plate in the inning to collect four runs on six hits blowing the game wide open and giving them all the offense they would need to take a third straight game off the Chasers. Omaha put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the frame scoring two runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate in newest Storm Chaser Chris Getz with the bases loaded, but he grounded in to a rally-ending double play.

Centerfielder Paulo Orlando continued his torrid stretch since returning from the disabled list on June 19 as he notched his fifth straight multi-hit game with three hits on the night, after the Brazil native had only four multi-hit games in his first 37 games this season. Orlando has raised his average from .212 to .271 with 11 hits in the span of those five games.

Omaha starter Chris Dwyer took the loss allowing four runs in 5.2 innings of work, ending his streak of four straight quality starts. Dwyer only has one win in his last seven home starts despite owning a 3.40 ERA in those seven outings (17 earned runs in 45.0 total innings). Dwyer has allowed four earned runs or more in only four of his 16 starts this year.

Iowa had every batter in the game collect a hit, and the Cubs have now totaled 43 hits in the three games so far in the series. The most hits the Storm Chasers have allowed in a four-game series was 43 during the I-Cubs first visit to Werner Park in April, and the most in any series was the 50 hits they gave up in the recent six-game series in Oklahoma City.

Omaha will look to salvage a game against Iowa as they send out right-hander Kelvin Herrera (0-1, 3.18 ERA) for his second start of the series, with left-hander Danny Duffy set to follow up Herrera. The I-Cubs will counter with left-hander Brooks Raley (6-5, 4.94 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
