Clinton LumberKings News Release
Davenport, IA - Rigoberto Garcia limited the River Bandits offense to just one run over seven innings but the bats never came alive for the LumberKings as they dropped a tough 2-1 decision at Modern Woodmen Park on Thursday night.
Garcia, 19, allowed only four hits over his seven frames but was tagged with the loss after departing prior to the eighth inning. The right-hander struck out Teoscar Hernandez with runners at second and third to end the seventh.
Quad Cities' starter Vincent Velasquez worked six scoreless innings and struck out seven as he picked up his ninth win. He was staked to an early 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles by Bobby Borchering and Rio Ruiz in the second inning.
Clinton had their fair share of opportunities. After Velasquez retired the side in order in the first, the LumberKings had at least one runner in every inning. They left the tying run in scoring position on four different occasions.
The 'Bandits got a huge insurance run in the eighth inning when Borchering lined a base hit up the middle to score Tony Kemp, building their lead to 2-0. Kemp started the inning with a four-pitch walk off Mark Bordonaro.
Clinton quickly got to within one in the ninth when D.J. Peterson hit his sixth home run of the year; an opposite field shot to make it 2-1. It was Peterson's 12th professional home run since the Mariners drafted him 12th overall in the MLB June Draft.
Closer Juan Minaya retired the next three in order to preserve the win for Quad Cities. Coupled with Peoria's win over Wisconsin, the LumberKings are now two games back in the hunt for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Division standings.
The rivals conclude the three-game series Friday when the LumberKings send left-hander Scott DeCecco (9-7, 4.05) to the mound against Quad Cities' right-hander Chris Devenski (1-2, 5.21). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM CT.
