Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs scored the game-winning run in the tenth inning to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1 following a nine-inning outing from Silfredo Garcia. The Chiefs ran their record to 24-22 in the season's second half and 62-51 overall on Charlie Tilson's walk-off triple.

The Chiefs put a runner on third against Ryan Gibbard in the second inning but failed to score. Breyvic Valera led off with a single and stole second as Trevor Martin struck out swinging. Ildemaro Vargas moved Valera to third with a ground out to the right side of the infield, but Juan Herrera couldn't bring him home as he struck out looking to end the inning.

With the help of a couple of defensive mistakes by the Chiefs the Timber Rattlers scored the game's first run in the fourth inning against Garcia. Mike Garza reached first on a Trevor Martin fielding error and Garrett Cooper moved him to second with a one-out single. Parker Berberet grounded to third, but Martin's throw airmailed first base and Garza scored on the error to put Wisconsin up 1-0. With two in scoring position because of the error, Garcia got back-to-back outs to escape the jam.

The Chiefs tied the game with a run in the fourth inning on some smart base running by Valera. With two outs Valera singled and swiped second with nobody covering the base. He came around to score as Martin singled to right field, tying the game at 1-1.

The Chiefs would have taken the lead the fifth had it not been for a basepath blunder. Herrera led off the inning with a single and after Gerwuins Velazco and C.J. McElroy Jr. were both retired he stole second with Tilson at the plate. Tilson singled to center but Herrera slipped between third and home and was tagged out at the plate has he tried to score, preserving the 1-1 tie.

With Garcia working on a career-high in innings pitched, the Timber Rattlers threatened to break the tie in the top of the ninth. Cooper led off the inning with a single and was pinch ran for by Adrian Williams. After Garcia hit Berberet with a pitch, he threw out Williams at third on Max Walla's bunt attempt. With a pair still on base, Garcia coaxed a 5-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Chiefs had a chance to get Garcia the win in the ninth after putting a runner in scoring position with one out against Preston Gainey. Valera reached on a lead-off walk and Martin moved him to second with a sac bunt. Vargas was intentionally walked and with two on Herrera hit a blooper to short left field that was caught on the run by Orlando Arcia, who doubled off Valera at second to send the game into extra innings.

After missing the opportunity to win the game in nine innings, the Chiefs won it in extras. With one out McElroy Jr. singled to right field, and Tilson followed with a triple into the right field corner. McElroy Jr. raced around to score and give the Chiefs the 2-1 win.

Garcia pitched nine innings giving up one unearned run on six hits and one walk while striking out four. Dixon Llorens (2-2), gave up one hit in a scoreless 10th inning while striking out the side.
